On the 21st of August 2017, the China Center for International Knowledge on Development (CIKD) was officially launched in Beijing. During the launch ceremony, the Finance Center for South-South Cooperation (FCSSC) and the South South Education Foundation (SSEF), together signed a cooperation agreement with CIKD, to form cooperation and partnership among the three parties in areas of South-South cooperation and development experience sharing. The trilateral cooperation will include joint research, organized seminars and so on, with an initial focus on industrial parks’ research and knowledge sharing. The Agreement was signed by Dr. Wuzhong, Director-General of FCSSC and SSEF, and Mr. Gong Sen, Executive Deputy Director of CIKD. Mr. Cai E’sheng, Chairman of FCSSC and SSEF, Mr. Li Wei, Director of CIKD and the Development Research Center of the State Council (DRC), Mr. Zhang Laiming, First Deputy Director of CIKD and Deputy Director of DRC and other related figures also attended the ceremony.
CIKD, proposed by President Xi Jinping at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015, aims to support research and exchange knowledge for sustainable development globally. FCSSC and SSEF were non-profit international organizations established under the framework of United Nation’s Sustainable Development Agenda, specializing in production capacity cooperation, development experience exchange, financial services and education exchanges.
According to the Agreement, FCSSC and SSEF will provide the financial support to CIKD in areas of research, knowledge sharing and other related activities; at the same time, the three parties will share the research findings as cooperation partners.
At the launch ceremony of CIKD, as well as the release of China’s progress report of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, CIKD signed more cooperation agreements or memorandums of understanding with institutions other than FCSSC and SSEF, such as the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, the United Nations Development Programme in China, the World Bank, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund in China, and the East Asia Department of the Asian Development Bank. The Ceremony received letters of congratulation from President Xi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. President Xi noted that China would not only strive for the promotion of Sustainable Development Agenda, but also contribute to development experience sharing and international development cooperation by institutions like CIKD. Secretary-General Guterres mentioned that China had become the real global leader in South-South cooperation, and the “Belt and Road Initiative” reaffirmed China’s commitment to global peace and prosperity. “The United Nations will continue to work with China to make contributions to world peace and development together,” he added.
