Belt and Road Summit

On May 16, 2017, as a side event of the “Belt and Road Summit”, the 2017 annual conference of the “Silk Road Think Tank Network (SiLKS)” was held at the Development Research Center of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China (DRC). This meeting focused on “Exploring Opportunities in the Belt and Road”, “Deepening the Cooperation on the Plans of the Belt and Road”, “Promoting Joint Action along the Belt and Road” and other issues. As a strategic partner of the DRC, the Finance Center for South-South Cooperation (FCSSC) fully participated in the conference.

The delegates agreed that it would be necessary for the participants to engage in more in-depth and extensive cooperation by grasping great opportunities created by the “Belt and Road” initiative, among which strengthening policy communication, improving institutional mechanisms, promoting development strategies’ sharing and civic exchange, are the key initiatives and tasks. SiLKS must be able to contribute to the wisdom and play an irreplaceable role.

SiLKS members and partners reached an important agreement on jointly building the “Belt and Road”, and issued the “SiLKS Beijing Joint Action Declaration”, which expressed their willing to continue to work together to actively play their respective advantages to further strengthen information exchange, knowledge sharing, cooperative research and capacity building, so as to provide a high level of intellectual support for the “Belt and Road” and world peace and development. The Declaration has been included in the achievement list of the “Belt and Road Summit”.

The meeting also passed the first SiLKS Steering Committee, and elected Mr. Li Wei, the president of DRC as the first Steering Committee chairman. The main functions of the SiLKS Steering Committee are: to provide guidance and strategic advice for SiLKS development strategies, cooperation mechanisms, results reports, etc.; to approve new members and partner agencies to join; to promote the international influence and competitiveness of SiLKS and so on.

In addition, E-SiLKS, which could facilitate closer collaboration and exchange of information and communication between SiLKS members and partners, was activated in the meeting. E-SiLKS will also act as the window and platform for the international community to better understand and support SiLKS.
