FCSSC Signed a Partnership Agreement with the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation


On the afternoon of August 21, 2017, the Finance Center for South-South Cooperation (FCSSC) officially signed a Partnership Agreement with the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), marking the official establishment of cooperation and partnership between the two parties. According to the agreement, FCSSC will make contributions to support the United Nations Trust Fund for South-South Cooperation (UNFSSC), and actively promote the development of South-South cooperation towards a higher and profounder level through close cooperation with UNOSSC. Mr. Cai E’sheng, Chairman of FCSSC, Dr. Wuzhong, Vice President and Director-General of FCSSC, Dr. Zhang Laiwu, Chief Economist of FCSSC, Mr. Jorge Chediek, Director of UNOSSC, Madam Wang Xiaojun, Deputy Director of FCSSC, and other related figures attended the signing ceremony in Beijing.

Regarding FCSSC’s contributions to UNFSSC, the initial focus will be the Global Coalition of Think Tank Networks for South-South Cooperation – the South-South Global Thinkers Initiative, and the Programme of Scaling-up Southern Solutions for Sustainable Development through Advanced Youth Leadership. With a clear action plan on the schedule, FCSSC will work closely with UNOSSC under the framework of United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda.

The cooperation between FCSSC and UNOSSC can date back to February 2016, when the Director of UNOSSC, Mr. Jorge Chediek formally invited FCSSC to participate in the 9th Session of the Global South-South Development Expo, which was organized by UNOSSC in Dubai World Trade Center. Headed by Mr. Zhang Zhiping, Executive President of FCSSC, the team of FCSSC not only shared the organization’s experience on South-South cooperation with hundreds of senior representatives from more than 20 UN agencies and 90 UN member states around the world, but also delivered a speech at the plenary session.

FCSSC is a non-profit international organization registered and founded in Hong Kong. It is an integral platform set under the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Agenda framework, which specializes in production capacity cooperation, development experience exchange and financial services, in order to promote pragmatic cooperation and partnerships among governments of developing countries, private enterprises, multilateral development institutions and international development assistance organizations. In addition, guided by successful models, the FCSSC provides comprehensive solution plans for South-South cooperation projects and uses financial services as means to assist countries of the Global South to propel industrialization and achieve sustainable development, in an effort to make valuable contributions to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The FCSSC has been in Special Consultative Status with ECOSOC of the United Nations since 2017.

Founded in 1974 by the UN General Assembly with a mandate to advocate for and coordinate South-South and triangular cooperation on a global and UN system-wide basis, UNOSSC not only mainstreams South-South cooperation across the UN system and throughout the international development community by leveraging its global reach as well as its policy and institutional capacities to assist UN agencies and developing countries in strengthening their South-South cooperation capacities, but also engages a wide range of partners, including Member States, UN entities, multilateral bodies and private-sector and civil society organizations in order to provide the most efficient, effective and comprehensive support for South-South cooperation.
